The History of Poker Chips

March 29th, 2010 at 4:22

Gaming chips have been made from a huge range of materials in an almost infinite selection of variations since the birth of betting and the need to track winnings. The most commonly used components used at this time in the manufacture of new poker chips are plastic, clay composite, and acrylics. Clay chips, the primary of the bunch, have been made in the US since the late 19th century.

Back in the 1800s, poker enthusiasts seemed to use any tiny valuable item imaginable. Early poker enthusiasts sometimes employed jagged gold pieces along with chips – chiefly manufactured of wood and clay. By the 1900s, poker chip designs began to play a greater prominence, and the smooth sides of older chips gave way to chips with engraved slits to keep them neatly arranged together.

There is no doubt that poker has increased constantly in appeal ever since its beginnings in the 19th century. With the huge increase of web gambling and unique TV shows, public interest in poker has accelerated a lot faster than ever before. Most folks are initially introduced to poker by television showssuch as Bravo’s "Celebrity Poker Showdown" or "Poker After Dark," and most will bet on their initial hands online. Despite net poker’s growth, nothing competes with the feeling of mixing heavy clay poker chips in your hand, throwing chips into the center of a poker table, or creating tall pilesstacks of chips after displaying a victorious hand.
