Phil Ivey has been referred to as the best poker competitor in the world by most of the top pros. He was born in Riverside, CA and relocated to New Jersey before his first birthday. His grandfather taught him penny-ante Five-Card Stud poker. From then on on, he was hooked on poker and wanted to discover whatever he possibly could about poker. Phil routinely told his grandparents that he wanted to be a professional poker player. He did not allow the adverse comments from others destroy his ambition of becoming one of the greatest poker competitors on the planet.
He began competing seriously after getting a fake ID with the name of Jerome. He sharpened his abilities at the casinos of Atlantic City. The first number of years for Phil were a learning experience and coming away with a win wasn’t a normal thing at the time. Phil became known at the 2000 WSOP when he made two final tables and won his 1st WSOP bracelet, in a $2, five hundred Pot-Limit Omaha game. At the final table he destroyed a number of the well known pros including but not limited to "Amarillo Slim" Preston, David "Devilfish" Ulliot, and Phil Hellmuth, Jr.
He made a decision to take his skills to the next level and moved out west to Las Vegas. Phil continues to participate in in "The Big Game" at the Bellagio with the best players on the planet. Phil credits his success to dedication and a continuing passion for poker. He states that he is picking up skills every day and is incredibly abashed about his success. He knows he makes mistakes every single game of poker and always aspires to improve.
Although Ivey has come first in some large tournaments, he likes winning cash games on a normal basis.
